Joyce Gentry, Attorney and Guardian ad Litem
  • Joyce Gentry skirts the edge of the law, and gets away with it. In the State of New Mexico v Gentry, Joyce Gentry was charged with four crimes: barratry, malicious prosecution, and two counts of making a false report. Unfortunately, attorneys protect their own, even to the point where they wink and nod at violations of the law. Note that the case was dismissed with a trial finding of nolle prosequi. In other words, the prosecuting attorney from the Bernalillo County district attorney's office voluntarily dropped the case, leading to the dismissal. Those of you who are old enough may remember the book Animal Farm. "Some pigs are more equal than others." Apparently, what is good for the pig is also good for the attorney. Such is the legal system we struggle with today. Note also that Joyce M. Gentry has an alias name: Kathlyn M. Beck. One must wonder what shady past is associated with the alias name, necessitating the change to Joyce Gentry.
  • Attorney and Guardian ad Litem Joyce Gentry going after homes to collect fees. Joyce Gentry is a family law attorney in Bernalillo County as well as a prominent Guardian ad Litem. Bernalillo County records have shown that she has placed fifty-six (count them, 56) liens against people's homes since 1988. Download real estate records as pdf. It is legal to have a lien placed on a home to put pressure on a person to pay a judgment against them. However, CFJ is concerned that this may indicate a practice of charging fees at a level that is unexpected or that it is obvious a client cannot pay with the a priori plan to put a lien against the client's home if he/she cannot pay. This is yet another burden placed on New Mexico families. As a local attorney has put it, "Joyce has an unusual collection procedure."
  • Joyce Gentry repeatedly attempts to force a $500 fee on a Pro Se litigant's constitutional right to petition the court. It seems that Joyce does not understand basic law. The Pro Se mother of three had to declare indigency with the Court. (She does not have enough money to pay any filing fees.) With this knowledge, Joyce decided to dig in and demand that family court Judge Angela Jewell exact a financial penalty on the mother each time she attempts to exercise her right by the U.S. Constitution to file a motion, or petition the court. Download the first counter motion as pdf. The hearing has not yet been set on this issue. Download the second counter motion as pdf. The appalling part of this story is that the mother is simply trying to protect her children from their father, convicted of battery on a household member. Find out more here.
