Ernesto Romero, Second Judicial District Criminal Court Judge, Returning Family Court Judge
Judge Ernesto Romero was a family court judge in Bernalillo County for a few years up until 2006, when he was moved to the criminal court. While in the family court, Judge Romero enjoyed a reputation of being the most excused (and complained about) judge of that court. Judge Romero did not last long in the criminal court. It appears that the public defenders got together and complained about his behavior to the point that he was recently removed. (see August 11 Albuquerque Journal article "2 Judges Switch Court Divisions") In other words, Judge Ernesto Romero was not good enough for the criminal suspects in New Mexico, but our state seems to think he is just fine for parents and children!

In fact, Judge Romero remains confused about the difference between criminal court and family court. Perhaps it was his propensity to jail parents from his perch on the family court bench for disproportionately minor actions - leaving some with felony charges on their records that adversely impact everything from their ability to vote to their ability to earn a living to support their children - that landed him in criminal court in the first place. How can a family court judge incarcerate a person with felony charges from the family court bench? This is a regular practice with Judge Romero - an act of retribution by a man in a black robe who abuses the power bestowed upon him. Below you will see several such cases provided. We encourage you to contact Governor Bill Richardson (write to: Office of the Governor, 490 Old Santa Fe Trail, Room 400, Santa Fe, NM 87501, or call him at (505) 476-2200, or email him Governor Bill Richardson) and demand the removal of this vindictive and unstable man from the bench.

Determine for yourself whether justice is being served by the actions of this judge. Below we have posted the hearing transcripts, case histories, and resulting orders that have been cause for great concern among our membership. In addition, you will see individual members' attempts, along with a growing number of CFJ attempts, to get some help from the authorities in investigating the rapidly growing problem of Judge Ernesto Romero's behavior.

Do you have information of concern or have you filed a complaint to an official regarding this Judge? CFJ would like to know! Please contact us via email info@family-justice.org class telephone (505) 319-3486, or postal mail at P.O. Box 21996, Albuquerque, NM 87154. Help us root out problem persons in the court system!
