The following Rules of Professional Conduct are virtually a verbatim extract from NMRA 2004 Ed. Vol. 2
Specific locations are listed at the end of each numbered rule.

  1. A lawyer should use the law's procedures only for legitimate purposes and not to harass or intimidate others. Preamble
  2. The attorney-client privilege is that of the client and not the lawyer. Preamble
  3. A lawyer shall provide competent representation to a client. Competent representation requires the legal knowledge, skill, thoroughness and preparation reasonably necessary for the representation. 16-101
  4. If an attorney abandon's his client and the case, despite his having been paid a substantial fee, he violates this rule and warrants suspension. 16-101
  5. A lawyer shall abide by a client's decisions concerning the objectives of representation… and shall consult with the client as to the means by which they are to be pursued. 16-102
  6. A lawyer shall keep a client reasonably informed about the status of a matter and promptly comply with reasonable requests for information. 16-10
  7. A lawyer's fee shall be reasonable. 16-105
  8. A lawyer may acquire a lien granted by law to secure the lawyer's fee or expenses;…16-108
  9. The dual role of a guardian ad litem to represent the best interests of a child while also representing the child's wishes to the court even when they conflict with the position of the guardian ad litem conforms to the requirements of the Rules of Professional Conduct. 16-114
  10. A client has a right to discharge at any time, with or without cause, subject to liability for payment for the lawyer's services. 16-116
  11. A lawyer shall make reasonable efforts to expedite litigation consistent with the interests of the client. 16-302
  12. A lawyer shall not knowingly: make a false statement of material fact or law to a tribunal;…. offer evidence that the lawyer knows to be false. 16-303
  13. A lawyer shall not: unlawfully obstruct another party's access to evidence or unlawfully alter, destroy or conceal a document or other material having a potential evidentiary value…. falsify evidence, counsel or assist a witness to testify falsely, or offer an inducement to a witness that is prohibited by law;… in pretrial procedure, make a frivolous discovery request or fail to make reasonably diligent effort to comply with a legally proper discovery request by an opposing party;…16-304
  14. In representing a client, a lawyer shall not use means that have no substantial purpose other than to embarrass, delay or burden a third person,… 16-404
  15. It is professional misconduct for a lawyer to: engage in any conduct that adversely reflects on his fitness to practice law. 16-804
