Getting Started
Prior to taking any action with regard to your case, we strongly recommend that you take some time to learn the basics of representing yourself, including filing motions, arguing in the courtroom, discovery, and evidence. You also need to have easy access to New Mexico family law, including Chapter 40 of the statutes, the New Mexico Rules of Civil Procedure, the Local Rules for your district, and case law. You can find out how to access this information by contacting CFJ, the Pro Se office at the courthouse (if available in your county) or by attending CFJ Pro Se sessions. Our Pro Se sessions can provide you with answers to specific questions, other Pro Se members to contact, and insight regarding case strategy.
If you do not currently have an active family court case, you begin by filing a petition. Otherwise, with an active case, you will need to accomplish three steps:
  1. file a Motion to Withdraw (your current attorney),
  2. file an Entry of Appearance, and
  3. obtain your legal file.
